Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Did Dick Pick the wrong Curtis Hixon show?

Remember how blown away you were when Dick's Picks #1 was released? That gorgeous Here Comes Sunshine and exquisite Weather Report Suite Prelude mesmerized, and that simplistic and functional artwork promised future editions of more amazing shows to come!

Recently I dusted off the show from the previous night in Tampa and I am totally blown away, unable to stop listening to the amazing and jazzy jams!

The first set is well played, but the real action starts about 4 minutes into China Cat when the segue begins, featuring four and a half minutes of some very fine Jer/Weir interplay. The WRS, though not as tightly played as the following night, is still phenomenal and its two jams are incredibly jazz infused.

Its obvious why Latavala made his selection, but I think the second set from 12/18 blows it away! The Dark Star may not contain the thematic type jamming like on 11/11, but is instead a cornucopia of moods, with some of the finest jazz interplay I've heard from the band, punctuated by some explosive ordinance from Phil and a particularly scary feedback jam!

The sound quality on this SBD is A+ and the mix is perfection, you can hear everything! Because of this, its clear that Weir brought his A game, and make no bones about it, these jams are extraordinary because he is playing well. The Eyes in particular is dynamite, again featuring some fused interplay, this time its Phil and Bob driving!

Does anyone know why this phenomenal show is not archived here at LMA? Was it one of the pulled shows?

If you do not already own this incredible jazzy show, I strongly recommend that you immediately go you know where, and do you know what!

hi Cliff,

I'm a big fan of DP1. the HCS might be my favorite performance ever. can't believe I've never stumbled upon 12/18. it's being downloaded as we speak. thanks.

as for being pulled from the Archive - looks like they pulled most of the good fall 73 stuff. have to believe there is at least one release coming in the very near future (not sure if 12/18 was there to begin with though).

by the way, have you listened to the NFA > GDTRFB from today's Tapers? unbelievable music.

i'm a huge 73 fan. next to 69, gotta be my favorite dead era. you can do no wrong branding any 73 show an official release.

I realize you have to start somewhere but I allways thought DP 1 was weird. The mix I thought was kind of klunky and weird and then here you have a 73 show with a four minute Other 1? And I can think of a lot of songs I'd put on instead of Around X 2. And I certainly don't understand what makes that HCS the ONE. I mean I like it but not more than say 2-15-73 which I personally consider a better version. If I were going to release a 73 I know I wouldn't have started with that one ( no offense Dick, RIP ).

I probably would have gone for 11-11, 12-2, or 11-14. But you are right, they all kick ass. So do quite a few others that year before fall. Is it me though or is that other one from DP 1 short? Compare it to that huge freakin Other Sandwhich from 11-14.

from a dupree's diamond article(i think)dick wanted both nights released but that was nixed by the band.this was the first dick' pick's and the band wasn't sure if it would go over well.dick decided on the the last night because at the time HCS had never made it on to a official live release.fall/winter 73 was one of dick's favorite period and one of the best couple of months by the band imho.hopefully one day complete shows from that time period come out.until then we have some great SBD sources to get by with.

hey Tigerbolt, I agree with you on this time period. I am just getting into this one now, have the classics.

Can you or anyone else suggest a top 10 from this era.

Thanks in advance.

Going to get 12-18 now -- Thanks Cliff!

Some of those late '73 shows kick ass more than others.....definitely not all Picks-worthy (or now, Road Trips-worthy), but in general, you could pick almost any show and people would say "but the other shows that week are even better!"
At the beginning of the Picks series, Dick had a lot of trouble with the band vetoing his picks, or in this case even editing it.

The DP1 Other One meltdown is short, but I loved it....
I like the Sunshine from 12/6 even more, but it has a little cut that may prevent it from release.

And by the way, the selections for this week's Taper's Section are all exceptionally strong. No '80s first-set fillers, just one '70s jam after another!
Lemieux has been doing the Section for a whole year now, so I wonder if the selection strategy will change?
